They al\u00adso contain unique traces of their past en\u00advi\u00adron\u00adment, the in\u00adter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion of which is clo\u00adse\u00adly de\u00adpendent on tem\u00adpe\u00adra\u00adture.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, ma\u00adny stu\u00addies have fo\u00adcu\u00adsed on spe\u00adleo\u00adthems, se\u00adcon\u00adda\u00adry car\u00adbo\u00adnate for\u00adma\u00adtions such as sta\u00adlag\u00admites and sta\u00adlag\u00admi\u00adtic flows, be\u00adcause of their abi\u00adli\u00adty to ar\u00adchive pa\u00adlaeoen\u00advi\u00adron\u00admen\u00adtal in\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion that can be da\u00adted with pre\u00adci\u00adsion over the last 0.5 Ma or so. Se\u00adve\u00adral me\u00adcha\u00adnisms, in\u00adclu\u00adding ther\u00admal dif\u00adfu\u00adsion in the be\u00addrock and ad\u00advec\u00adtion by wa\u00adter and air, trans\u00adfer heat from the ou\u00adter sur\u00adface to the ca\u00advi\u00adty. De\u00adpen\u00adding on the re\u00adla\u00adtive im\u00adpor\u00adtance of these dif\u00adferent flows, the un\u00adder\u00adground tem\u00adpe\u00adra\u00adture will be more or less at\u00adte\u00adnua\u00adted and out of phase in res\u00adponse to tem\u00adpo\u00adral va\u00adria\u00adtions in the out\u00adside tem\u00adpe\u00adra\u00adture.<\/p>\n<p>Un\u00adders\u00adtan\u00adding the ther\u00admal res\u00adponse of karst to cli\u00admate change is the\u00adre\u00adfore fun\u00adda\u00admen\u00adtal to quan\u00adti\u00adfying dissolution\/precipitation rates, in\u00adter\u00adpre\u00adting the geo\u00adche\u00admi\u00adcal va\u00adria\u00adtions ob\u00adser\u00adved in concre\u00adtions and as\u00adses\u00adsing the im\u00adpact on li\u00adving or\u00adga\u00adnisms in caves.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"more-text\"><br>\n<br>Ba\u00adsed on the li\u00adte\u00adra\u00adture, we have for\u00admu\u00adla\u00adted three hy\u00adpo\u00adtheses that we will seek to va\u00adli\u00addate in the pro\u00adject:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Ven\u00adti\u00adla\u00adtion of kars\u00adtic mas\u00adsifs is a do\u00admi\u00adnant me\u00adcha\u00adnism for heat trans\u00adfer<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>The reac\u00adtion time of mas\u00adsifs and caves de\u00adpends main\u00adly on ad\u00advec\u00adtive flows (wa\u00adter and air), ra\u00adther than on heat conduc\u00adtion in the rock.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Heat ex\u00adchange is suf\u00adfi\u00adcient to pro\u00adduce a si\u00adgni\u00adfi\u00adcant quan\u00adti\u00adty of conden\u00adsa\u00adtion wa\u00adter to re\u00adcharge kars\u00adtic sys\u00adtems, at least un\u00adder cer\u00adtain condi\u00adtions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\nThe aim of the pro\u00adject is to car\u00adry out an in-depth ana\u00adly\u00adsis of mass and heat trans\u00adfer in karst sys\u00adtems in or\u00adder to ans\u00adwer these ques\u00adtions. In par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar, we want to cha\u00adrac\u00adte\u00adrise the conse\u00adquences of cli\u00admate change on the un\u00adder\u00adground en\u00advi\u00adron\u00adment and de\u00adter\u00admine the ther\u00admal res\u00adponse of a ca\u00advi\u00adty on dif\u00adferent spa\u00adtial and tem\u00adpo\u00adral scales. We will de\u00adve\u00adlop a sim\u00adpli\u00adfied glo\u00adbal mo\u00addel of kars\u00adtic mas\u00adsifs made up of se\u00adve\u00adral sub-sys\u00adtems (rock, conduit, epi\u00adkarst, etc.). Heat trans\u00adfer by conduc\u00adtion and ad\u00advec\u00adtion (wa\u00adter and air) in the rock and conduits will be ful\u00adly cou\u00adpled. Ho\u00adwe\u00adver, the ef\u00adfects of na\u00adtu\u00adral ven\u00adti\u00adla\u00adtion in the caves and of the epi\u00adkarst are not cur\u00adrent\u00adly well quan\u00adti\u00adfied, ma\u00adking their mo\u00addel\u00adling ris\u00adky. Field mea\u00adsu\u00adre\u00adments will the\u00adre\u00adfore be car\u00adried out in pa\u00adral\u00adlel with the si\u00admu\u00adla\u00adtions.<\/p>\n<p>To achieve this ob\u00adjec\u00adtive, the pro\u00adject re\u00adlies on two teams with com\u00adple\u00admen\u00adta\u00adry skills, one spe\u00adcia\u00adli\u00adsing in the mo\u00adni\u00adto\u00adring and concep\u00adtua\u00adli\u00adsa\u00adtion of kars\u00adtic sys\u00adtems (SISKA), the other in heat and mass trans\u00adfer (FAST). These two as\u00adpects will the\u00adre\u00adfore be dealt with in pa\u00adral\u00adlel. Ini\u00adtial\u00adly, a pa\u00adra\u00adme\u00adtric stu\u00addy (ini\u00adtial mo\u00addel) will be car\u00adried out using sim\u00adpli\u00adfied ana\u00adly\u00adti\u00adcal mo\u00addels to es\u00adti\u00admate the ma\u00adgni\u00adtude of the res\u00adpec\u00adtive pro\u00adcesses un\u00adder dif\u00adferent condi\u00adtions. This will en\u00adable the content of the<br>\nfirst nu\u00adme\u00adri\u00adcal mo\u00addel (part 1) and field da\u00adta ac\u00adqui\u00adsi\u00adtion (part 2). The two com\u00adpo\u00adnents will be syn\u00adthe\u00adsi\u00adsed ite\u00adra\u00adti\u00adve\u00adly throu\u00adghout the re\u00adsearch pro\u00adgramme, en\u00adabling the three hy\u00adpo\u00adtheses to be dis\u00adcus\u00adsed at the end. Two main sites will be ins\u00adtru\u00admen\u00adted, in\u00adclu\u00adding the Mi\u00adlandre un\u00adder\u00adground la\u00adbo\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry where a large amount of da\u00adta is al\u00adrea\u00addy avai\u00adlable. The sites will be mo\u00adni\u00adto\u00adred for tem\u00adpe\u00adra\u00adture and for the main pa\u00adra\u00adme\u00adters control\u00adling mass trans\u00adfer: air and wa\u00adter flows, using di\u00adrect (flow rates) and in\u00addi\u00adrect (CO2 and ra\u00addon) mea\u00adsu\u00adre\u00adments.<\/p>\n<p>A team of two PhD stu\u00addents is plan\u00adned to de\u00adploy the mo\u00adni\u00adto\u00adring in the field and de\u00adve\u00adlop the skills and si\u00admu\u00adla\u00adtion tools nee\u00added for the pro\u00adject. Ex\u00adpe\u00adrien\u00adced re\u00adsear\u00adchers from the SISKA and FAST will ac\u00adti\u00adve\u00adly sup\u00adport the PhD stu\u00addents to<br>\nes\u00adta\u00adblish the pro\u00adce\u00addures, de\u00adve\u00adlop the skills and take the de\u00adci\u00adsions nee\u00added to re\u00adsolve the chal\u00adlenges that lie ahead.<\/p>\n<p>This pro\u00adject will un\u00addoub\u00adted\u00adly pro\u00advide new in\u00adfor\u00adma\u00adtion on the res\u00adponse of kars\u00adtic mas\u00adsifs to cli\u00admate change, on the ven\u00adti\u00adla\u00adtion of mas\u00adsifs and on the im\u00adpor\u00adtance of conden\u00adsa\u00adtion in re\u00adchar\u00adging aqui\u00adfers.<\/p>\n<p>The re\u00adsults of the pro\u00adject will al\u00adso pro\u00advide es\u00adsen\u00adtial da\u00adta for other fields: drin\u00adking wa\u00adter sup\u00adply (tem\u00adpe\u00adra\u00adture va\u00adria\u00adtions in kars\u00adtic springs), pu\u00adblic health (ra\u00addon ex\u00adha\u00adled in dwel\u00adlings), spe\u00adleo\u00adge\u00adne\u00adsis (conden\u00adsa\u00adtion cor\u00adro\u00adsion), per\u00adma\u00adfrost (na\u00adtu\u00adral gla\u00adciers), low-tem\u00adpe\u00adra\u00adture geo\u00adther\u00admal ener\u00adgy (ef\u00adfect of conduits on heat ex\u00adchange), tun\u00adnel\u00adling and mi\u00adning (pre\u00addic\u00adtion of voids and mas\u00adsive wa\u00adter in\u00adtru\u00adsions), re\u00admote sen\u00adsing (in\u00adter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtion of ther\u00admal ano\u00adma\u00adlies), cave conser\u00adva\u00adtion (pro\u00adtec\u00adtion of ar\u00adchaeo\u00adlo\u00adgi\u00adcal and tou\u00adrist caves), the car\u00adbon cycle (dis\u00adso\u00adlu\u00adtion and pre\u00adci\u00adpi\u00adta\u00adtion of car\u00adbo\u00adnates are control\u00adled by pCO2, and the\u00adre\u00adfore by ven\u00adti\u00adla\u00adtion), sub\u00adter\u00adra\u00adnean Elles abritent \\u00e9galement des traces uniques de leur environnement pass\\u00e9 dont l\\u2019interpr\\u00e9tation d\\u00e9pend \\u00e9troitement de la temp\\u00e9rature.<br \/>\\n<br \/>Au cours des derni\\u00e8res ann\\u00e9es, beaucoup d\\u2019\\u00e9tudes ont port\\u00e9 sur les sp\\u00e9l\\u00e9oth\\u00e8mes, formations carbonat\\u00e9es secondaires telles que stalagmites et coul\\u00e9es stalagmitiques, en raison de leur capacit\\u00e9 \\u00e0 archiver des informations pal\\u00e9oenvironnementales que l\\u2019on peut dater avec pr\\u00e9cision, sur les derniers 0.5 Ma environ. Plusieurs m\\u00e9canismes, dont la diffusion thermique dans l\\u2019encaissant rocheux et l\\u2019advection par l\\u2019eau et l\\u2019air, transf\\u00e8rent de la chaleur de la surface ext\\u00e9rieure vers la cavit\\u00e9. En fonction de l\\u2019importance relative de ces diff\\u00e9rents flux, la temp\\u00e9rature souterraine sera plus ou moins att\\u00e9nu\\u00e9e et d\\u00e9phas\\u00e9e en r\\u00e9ponse aux variations temporelles de la temp\\u00e9rature ext\\u00e9rieure.<br \/>\\n<br \/>Bien comprendre la r\\u00e9ponse thermique du karst au changement climatique est donc fondamental pour quantifier les taux de dissolution\\\/pr\\u00e9cipitation et interpr\\u00e9ter les variations g\\u00e9ochimiques observ\\u00e9es dans les concr\\u00e9tions, et pour \\u00e9valuer les impacts sur les organismes vivants dans les grottes.<br \/><\\\/p>\\n<span class=\\\"more-text\\\">\\n<br \/>A partir de la litt\\u00e9rature, nous avons formul\\u00e9 trois hypoth\\u00e8ses que nous chercherons \\u00e0 valider dans le projet :\\n\n\n<ol>   \\n\n\n<li>La ventilation des massifs karstiques repr\\u00e9sente un m\\u00e9canisme dominant pour le transfert de chaleur<\\\/li><br \/>\\n\n\n<li>Le temps de r\\u00e9action des massifs et des grottes d\\u00e9pend principalement des flux advectifs (eau et air), plus que de la conduction de chaleur dans la roche<\\\/li><br \/>\\n\n\n<li>Les \\u00e9changes thermiques sont suffisants pour produire une quantit\\u00e9 significative d\\u2019eau de condensation pour recharger les syst\\u00e8mes karstiques, au-moins dans certaines conditions.<\\\/li>\\n<\\\/ol><br \/>\\nL\\u2019objectif du projet est d\\u2019effectuer une analyse approfondie des transferts de masse et de chaleur dans les syst\\u00e8mes karstiques pour r\\u00e9pondre \\u00e0 ces questions. En particulier nous souhaitons caract\\u00e9riser les cons\\u00e9quences d\\u2019un changement climatique sur le milieu souterrain et d\\u00e9terminer la r\\u00e9ponse thermique d\\u2019une cavit\\u00e9 \\u00e0 diff\\u00e9rentes \\u00e9chelles spatiales et temporelles. Nous d\\u00e9velopperons un mod\\u00e8le global simplifi\\u00e9 des massifs karstiques constitu\\u00e9 de plusieurs sous-syst\\u00e8mes (roche, conduit, \\u00e9pikarst\\u2026). Les transferts de chaleur par conduction et advection (eau et air) dans la roche et les conduits seront enti\\u00e8rement coupl\\u00e9s. Cependant, les effets de la ventilation naturelle des grottes, et de l\\u2019\\u00e9pikarst ne sont actuellement pas bien quantifi\\u00e9s, rendant leur mod\\u00e9lisation hasardeuse. Des mesures de terrain seront donc men\\u00e9es parall\\u00e8lement aux simulations.<br \/>\\n\\n <br \/>Pour atteindre cet objectif, le projet s\\u2019appuie sur deux \\u00e9quipes aux comp\\u00e9tences compl\\u00e9mentaires, l\\u2019une sp\\u00e9cialiste du monitoring et de la conceptualisation des syst\\u00e8mes karstiques (ISSKA), l\\u2019autre des transferts de chaleur et de masse (FAST). Ces deux volets seront donc trait\\u00e9s en parall\\u00e8le. Au d\\u00e9but, une \\u00e9tude param\\u00e9trique (mod\\u00e8le initial) sera men\\u00e9e avec des mod\\u00e8les analytiques simplifi\\u00e9s afin d\\u2019estimer la magnitude des processus respectifs sous diff\\u00e9rentes conditions. Ceci permettra de pr\\u00e9ciser le contenu du\\npremier mod\\u00e8le num\\u00e9rique (volet 1) et de l\\u2019acquisition des donn\\u00e9es sur le terrain (volet 2). Les deux volets seront synth\\u00e9tis\\u00e9s it\\u00e9rativement tout au long du programme de recherche, ce qui permettra de discuter les trois hypoth\\u00e8ses \\u00e0 la fin. Deux sites principaux seront instrument\\u00e9s incluant le laboratoire souterrain de Milandre o\\u00f9 de nombreuses donn\\u00e9es sont d\\u00e9j\\u00e0 disponibles. Les sites seront monitor\\u00e9s en temp\\u00e9rature ainsi que pour les principaux param\\u00e8tres contr\\u00f4lant le transfert de masse : flux d\\u2019air et d\\u2019eau en utilisant des mesures directes (d\\u00e9bits) et indirectes (CO2 et radon).<br \/>\\n\\n<br \/>Une \\u00e9quipe de deux doctorants est pr\\u00e9vue pour d\\u00e9ployer le monitoring sur le terrain et d\\u00e9velopper les comp\\u00e9tence et outils de simulation n\\u00e9cessaires au projet. Les chercheurs exp\\u00e9riment\\u00e9s de l\\u2019ISSKA et du FAST soutiendront activement les doctorants pour\\n\\u00e9tablir les proc\\u00e9dures, d\\u00e9velopper les comp\\u00e9tences et prendre les d\\u00e9cisions n\\u00e9cessaires \\u00e0 r\\u00e9soudre les d\\u00e9fis qui se pr\\u00e9senteront.<br \/>\\n\\n<br \/>Ce projet apportera incontestablement des informations nouvelles sur la r\\u00e9ponse des massifs karstiques aux changements climatiques, sur la ventilation des massifs et sur l\\u2019importance de la condensation pour la recharge des aquif\\u00e8res.<br \/>\\n\\n <br \/>Les r\\u00e9sultats du projet apporteront aussi des donn\\u00e9es essentielles pour d\\u2019autres domaines : l\\u2019alimentation en eau potable (variations de temp\\u00e9rature des sources karstiques), sant\\u00e9 publique (radon exhal\\u00e9 dans les habitations), la sp\\u00e9l\\u00e9ogen\\u00e8se (corrosion par condensation), le permafrost (glaci\\u00e8res naturelles), la g\\u00e9othermie basse temp\\u00e9rature (effet des conduits sur les \\u00e9changes thermiques), le percement de tunnels et de mines (pr\\u00e9diction de vides et d\\u2019intrusions massives d\\u2019eau), la t\\u00e9l\\u00e9d\\u00e9tection (interpr\\u00e9tation d\\u2019anomalies thermiques), la conservation des grottes (protection des grottes arch\\u00e9ologiques et touristiques), le cycle du carbone (la dissolution et la pr\\u00e9cipitation des carbonates sont contr\\u00f4l\\u00e9es par la pCO2, donc par la ventilation), la biologie souterraine (biotopes\\nsouterrains)\\u2026<br
